Spectral Amplification of Seismic Motion Travelling Through Natural Sand Deposits

چکیده
Guidelines for seismic spectral amplification are provided in current building codes based on soil strength/stiffness by means of seismic site class. However, current codes do not make a difference between fully saturated and unsaturated soil deposits and do not account for effects of soil heterogeneity on seismic amplification. This study investigates the effect of natural small scale soil heterogeneity and degree of saturation on spectral amplification by means of transient nonlinear finite element analyses. Only cohesionless soil (sand) is considered in this study. The effects of presence of a structure are also studied for soils with two different relative densities. The analysis results are compared with guidelines in the Canadian Building Code and results from the literature. Design recommendation and guidelines on spectral amplification of seismic ground motion are provided in terms of the short (0.2s) and long period (1.0s) amplification factor.

Uncertainty in fundamental natural frequency estimation for alluvial deposits
Seismic waves are filtered as they pass through soil layers, from bedrock to surface. Frequencies and amplitudes of the response wave are affected due to this filtration effect and this will result in different ground motion characteristics. Therefore, it is important to consider the impact of the soil properties on the evaluation of earthquake ground motions for the design of structures. Soil ...
متن کاملA Numerical Evaluation of Seismic Response of Shallow Soil Deposits
This paper employs one-dimensional numerical ground response analysis models to investigate seismic response of shallow cohesive and non-cohesive soil deposits on vertical propagation of horizontal shear waves. Soil response is modelled by traditional equivalent-linear (EL) frequency-domain analysis using DEEPSOIL software and nonlinear (NL) time-domain analysis using OPENSEES software. The ana...

Introduction One-dimensional site response analysis is widely performed to account for local site effects during an earthquake. Most of these approaches assume that dynamic soil properties are frequency independent. Laboratory test results as well as in-situ testing show that shear modulus and damping ratio are dependent on the frequency of loading. Although the amplification factor at ground ...

Ljubljana, the capital of Slovenia, is located in the central region of the country in a shallow sedimentary basin filled with Quaternary deposits. It is one of the most seismically active regions in Slovenia, with some important historical earthquakes that have caused damage and economic losses. The soft sediments are some of the most important factors responsible for the amplification of seis...

There are valuable investigations on the amplification effects of the topography on the seismic response in the frequency domain; however, a question is that how one can estimate the amplification of time domain peak ground acceleration (PGA), peak ground velocity (PGV), and peak ground displacement (PGD) over the topographic structures. In this study, the numerical approach has been used for t...
